Embracing Ishvara Pranidhana: Yoga for Surrender and Peace This December

December invites us to slow down, soften, and surrender into the quieter rhythm of winter. In yoga philosophy, this is the essence of Ishvara Pranidhana—the practice of trusting something greater than ourselves, releasing the illusion of control, and allowing life to unfold with grace.
While the holidays can easily pull us into a swirl of shoulds, schedules, and stresses, Ishvara Pranidhana reminds us that peace comes from accepting the moment as it is and choosing presence over perfection. Below you’ll find ways to practice surrender both on and off the mat, plus all of our heartwarming offerings this month to keep you grounded, nourished, and connected.
🧘♀️ On the Mat: Practices for Surrender
Forward Folds of Any Kind – Invite softness in the spine and surrender in the mind. Hold longer than usual and breathe into what arises.
Supported Bridge or Restorative Backbends – Use props to allow the body to open gently, reminding the heart that it doesn’t have to force or strain.
Yoga Nidra – The ultimate practice of letting go. Allow the body to rest while the mind drifts toward spacious awareness.
Long Exhales – Try a 1:2 breath ratio (inhale 4, exhale 8). It signals the nervous system to release and relax.
🌿 Off the Mat: Surrender in Daily Life
Pause Before You React – Give yourself a three-breath moment before responding to people or stressors.Let Something Be Imperfect – Whether it’s gift wrapping, holiday plans, or your to-do list—release the need to control the outcome.
Practice Gratitude for What Is – Instead of wishing the season looked different, honor the beauty in what’s already here.
Create a “Let It Go” Ritual – Write down one thing you’re ready to release this winter and offer it to a candle, a fire pit, or simply the earth.

And now one of my favorites from Danna Faulds...
Let go of the ways you thought life would unfold;
the holding of plans or dreams or expectations.
Let it all go.
Save your strength to swim with the tide.
The choice to fight what is here before you now
will only result in struggle, fear, and desperate attempts to flee from the very energy you long for.
Let go.
Let it all go and flow with the grace that washes through your days
whether you received it gently or with all your quills raised to defend against invaders.
Take this on faith; the mind may never find the explanations that it seeks,
but you will move forward nonetheless.
Let go, and the wave’s crest will carry you to unknown shores,
beyond your wildest dreams or destinations.
Let it all go and find the place of rest and peace, and certain transformation.
