Becoming Aware of the Subtle Ways We Steal

When we hear the word “stealing,” we often think of something obvious—taking something tangible that doesn’t belong to us. But the yoga practice of Asteya invites us to look deeper. Are there moments we take someone’s time by running late? Do we drain our own energy by saying “yes” when we mean “no”? Do we steal from ourselves by overextending or rushing through life without presence?

This week is about cultivating gentle awareness—without judgment. By recognizing the subtle ways we might take more than what’s freely given, we create space for honesty, balance, and ultimately, freedom.

Weekly Yoga Practice: A slow, grounding practice to become aware of where we overreach, overgive, or overextend

  • Slow Grounding Flow: Begin with lots of floor-based poses (Child’s Pose, Supine Twist, Cat/Cow) to anchor into the body’s natural rhythm.

  • Standing Poses: Warrior II, Triangle — hold for longer, emphasizing stability over depth.

  • Breathwork: 3-part breath (Dirga Pranayama) to anchor attention inward.

Closing Reflection: Notice moments when you wanted to push deeper or move faster. Where can you practice staying instead of striving?

Our mantra for the week is…

I honor what is mine and release what is not.

Our journaling prompts are…

Where in my life do I take more than I need—be it time, energy, attention, or resources?

Where do I feel depleted as a result?

And our meditation is…a meditation to listen and connect to enough and release excess

Breathe naturally. Inhale: “I have enough.” Exhale: “I am enough.” Let this be your rhythm for 5–10 minutes. What do you notice?
