The Permission to Rest: Yoga & Self Compassion for Slowing Down

3 min read

When was the last time you allowed yourself to rest without feeling guilty?

For many of us, slowing down can feel surprisingly difficult. We create endless to-do lists, fill our calendars, and measure our days by how much we accomplish. Even when our bodies are asking for a break, our minds keep moving. Somewhere along the way, we may have learned that rest is a reward for productivity rather than a basic human need. But what if rest is not something you have to earn? What if taking a pause is one of the most compassionate things you can do for yourself?

Nature offers us a beautiful reminder of this truth. In autumn, the trees release their leaves. The earth begins to quiet. The days grow shorter, inviting us to slow our pace and turn inward. We are part of that same natural rhythm. Self-compassion means recognizing when we need a moment to breathe, a little more sleep, a slower morning, or simply permission to do nothing at all. Rest is not falling behind. It is a way of honoring the body and mind that carry us through each day. Let yourself soften into the possibility that you are enough, even when you are doing nothing.

Our mantra for the week…

Rest is the gift I give myself without guilt

Our journaling prompts are…

  • What feelings arise when I slow down or take time for myself?

  • What beliefs have I learned about rest, productivity, and my worth?

  • What is one nourishing way I can create more space for rest in my life this week?

And our meditation is…a meditation to practice letting go (10 min)

Find a comfortable place to lie down or sit with support. Allow your body to settle into the surface beneath you.

Gently close your eyes or soften your gaze.

Take a slow breath in, and exhale without forcing anything.

Feel the ground beneath you. Notice the places where your body is supported.

For these next few moments, there is nowhere you need to go.

There is nothing you need to accomplish.

Bring your attention to your feet. Allow them to soften.

Let your legs grow heavy.

Release any unnecessary tension in your hips and belly.

Soften your shoulders, your hands, and your face.

With each exhale, imagine setting down one small responsibility, one expectation, or one thing you have been carrying.

You do not need to solve everything right now.

Silently repeat:

I am allowed to pause.

I am allowed to receive.

I am enough in this moment.

Imagine yourself resting beneath a tree in autumn. The branches above you are letting go of their leaves, trusting the natural rhythm of the season.

You, too, can release what you no longer need to carry.

Stay here for a few quiet breaths.

When you are ready, gently return your awareness to your surroundings, bringing the feeling of spaciousness with you.

Rest is an act of self-respect. It is a way of listening to your body, honoring your limits, and recognizing that your needs matter. Experiment with letting go of the pressure to fill every moment. Take a restorative yoga class, enjoy a quiet walk, or simply sit with a cup of tea without reaching for your phone. You don't need to justify your need for rest. Give yourself permission to slow down. Let rest be part of your practice, not something you have to earn.
