Listening to Your Body: How Yoga Can Help You Build Body Awareness

We spend a remarkable amount of time telling our bodies what they should be.

Stronger.

Thinner.

More flexible.

More energetic.

More productive.

We compare.

We correct.

We push.

But what if our body isn’t a problem to solve? What if it’s a teacher? Your body is constantly communicating.

A tight jaw might be asking for softness.

A shallow breath might be asking you to slow down.

Fatigue might be asking for rest.

A sense of ease might be telling you that you’re exactly where you need to be.

Yoga offers us the opportunity to listen. Your body doesn’t live yesterday. It doesn’t live tomorrow. It lives right here. Right now. That makes the body one of our most honest teachers. When we stop judging what we feel and simply become curious about it, we begin to develop a different relationship with ourselves. Instead of: “What’s wrong with me?” We can ask: “What is my body telling me?”

Our mantra for the week…

My body is worthy of listening to, caring for, and honoring.

Our journaling prompts are…

  • What signals does my body give me when I need rest, nourishment, movement, or space?

  • Where have I been ignoring something my body has been trying to tell me?

  • What would change if I treated my body as a trusted guide rather than something I needed to fix?

And our meditation is…a meditation to have a conversation with your body (10 min)

Lie down or sit comfortably.

Close your eyes.

Take a slow breath.

Bring your attention to your feet.

Without changing anything, simply notice.

Move your awareness to your legs.

Your hips.

Your belly.

Your chest.

Your shoulders.

Your arms.

Your neck.

Your face.

Now ask your body:

What do you need from me today?

Don’t search for an intellectual answer.

Listen for a sensation, emotion, image, or simple knowing.

Maybe your body asks for movement.

Maybe rest.

Maybe nourishment.

Maybe a boundary.

Maybe nothing at all.

Take a moment to thank your body for communicating with you.

Place a hand wherever you feel called.

Say:

“I am listening.”

Take three peaceful breaths.

Slowly open your eyes.

Your body has been with you through every chapter of your life. It has carried you through celebrations and grief, beginnings and endings, ordinary Tuesdays and extraordinary moments. Perhaps this month we can offer it something in return: our attention.

Not criticism.

Not comparison.

Not demands.

Just listening.

Your body may have been teaching you all along.
