The Art of Being Kind to Yourself: Yoga & Self Compassion

2 min read

How often do you offer kindness to others but forget to offer it to yourself?

When a friend makes a mistake, you remind them that they're human. When someone you love feels overwhelmed, you encourage them to take a breath and give themselves a break. Yet when we find ourselves in the same situation, our inner voice can become our harshest critic. We replay conversations, dwell on mistakes, and convince ourselves that we should be doing more, achieving more, or somehow being more.

Let's explore the practice of self-compassion: the simple but powerful act of treating ourselves with the same patience, understanding, and tenderness we offer the people we love. Self-compassion doesn't mean ignoring our challenges or pretending everything is perfect. It means acknowledging our struggles without allowing them to define our worth. As the leaves begin to change, let this season remind you that growth doesn't require perfection. Sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can do is soften our expectations and meet ourselves exactly where we are.

Our mantra for the week…

I am worthy of the kindness I give to others.

Our journaling prompts are…

  • When am I most critical of myself, and what would it look like to respond with kindness instead?

  • What would I say to a friend who was experiencing the same struggle I am facing right now?

  • What is one small way I can practice self-compassion in my daily life this

And our meditation is…a meditation to cultivate kindness for yourself (10 min)

Find a comfortable position, seated or lying down. Allow your body to settle and your breath to find its natural rhythm.

If it feels comfortable, place one hand over your heart and the other on your belly.

Take a slow breath in, and gently exhale.

Notice how you are feeling in this moment. There is nothing you need to fix, change, or figure out.

Bring to mind a moment when you were hard on yourself. Perhaps you made a mistake, felt overwhelmed, or believed you weren't doing enough.

Rather than revisiting the details, simply acknowledge the feeling.

Silently say to yourself:

I am human.

I am learning.

I deserve kindness.

Imagine offering yourself the same compassion you would offer someone you love. Let your breath soften your shoulders, your jaw, and the space around your heart.

Repeat quietly:

May I be patient with myself.

May I treat myself with kindness.

May I allow myself to be imperfect.

Rest here for a few breaths, allowing the words to settle.

When you are ready, gently return your attention to the room, carrying this kindness with you.

We cannot always control the challenges life brings, but we can begin to change the way we meet ourselves through them. Practice noticing your inner dialogue. When criticism arises, see if you can replace it with curiosity, understanding, and grace. You don't have to get everything right to be worthy of love. Speak to yourself as you would speak to someone you love. Let kindness begin with you.
